Many Americans suffer from depression.  In most cases, several have tried to commit suicide.  Per the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US with over 42,000 lives lost every year. [1] There are some that believe that only doctors can cure a person of depression, while others believe God is a healer and He has the authority to set a person free of that and any disorder.  The medical definition of depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.  Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. [2]  People tend to ask several questions regarding depression.  “Can a person be born with depression?  What makes a person get depress?  Is there a cure for depression?”

According to several psychiatrists, they believe it can be genetic.  They believe a family history of depression may increase the risk of you being depressed.  It is thought that depression is a complex trait, meaning that there are probably many different genes that each exert small effects, rather than a single gene that contributes to disease risk. [1]  For example, a mother who is pregnant and depress can pass her emotions to the unborn child resulting in the child possibly suffer from depression.  Many psychiatrists consider depression as a “chronic” illness/disease that requires treatment, which could lead to one taking several medications to maintain your mood swings over a long period of time.  Personally, I’m not an advocate of taking medicine to heal/cure your emotions.  All medicine have their side effects; while it may be a solution to one area of the body it can equally cause another area to be dysfunctional. With that said concerning this topic, do what you are lead to do that will help bring you to point where you can make as rational decision concerning your health as possible.  The following may not be a one size fits all solution for everyone but I believe it will help bring balance to your life so hopefully and prayfully, you will no longer need the medication to experience a peace of mind.

It’s time for God people to be set free from bondage of Depression.  The Word of God says, My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.” Hosea 4:6 NIV That’s right!  Because we have no knowledge we assume we can only be free by taking medications.  Doing it the “World way” instead of “Jesus way”.  The Word of God says, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19 NIV

A person could be in bondage to wrong thoughts, a philosophy, an attitude, an emotion, feelings or actions.  Also, depress bondages can destroy health, mental sanity, marriages, families, careers, and the destiny God has ordained for you to fulfill.  The root cause for bondage of any type is sin.  Sin or breaking the laws of God is always the root cause of bondage.  Many people justify their actions by stating “coming from a dysfunctional family” can have an effect through influences.  Although this is true, nevertheless, the bottom line is God’s laws were broken in some way. The Word of God says, “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse!  You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today.  But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.” Deut 11:26-28 NLT

Many people continue to remain bound once they have accepted Christ as their Lord.  Mainly due to not fully understanding the truth about what Jesus accomplished and willingly did for us.  They refuse to believe it; therefore, they never seek deliverance.  Also, they are not consistent with the daily process of renewing their minds with the Word and submitting their body to Jesus Christ.  The Word of God says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:9 NIV  You must repent by confessing and being willing to turn from your sin.  It is one thing to be forgiven of an act, but it is another thing to be cleansed of the unrighteousness that caused that act.

Let me share a brief testimony: Several years ago in my early 20”s I suffer from depression.  It was so server that I tried to commit suicide three times.  I didn’t have knowledge on what depression was during that time.  I remember a friend from my church coming over to my home to pray for me.  After they prayed, that spirit of depression left me.  However, a few years later I became depressed again, and this time I wanted medical help.  I scheduled and an appointment with a psychiatrist.  The psychiatrist asked me several questions about my family history.  During the time of my depression I was having family issues.  Every week I would go in and sit in a chair and told the psychiatrist how I felt and about my family.  I was a babe in Christ and didn’t know that God could set me free.  After a while of attending the appointments, the Psychiatrist mentioned prescribing me medication, which I declined.  Over the years I have heard people say what medication can do to an individuals body.  I left the office thinking, “What next?  I’m not going to get on medicine.”  However, I join a church that specializes in “Deliverance Services”.  It’s called, “Encounter Weekend” in which you spend time with God, learn and identify different categories of spiritual bondages.  Once identified there were several people available to pray and cast those spirits out of you.   Yes, I did say cast out because the Word of God says, “When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!” Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up. Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?” Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.” Mark 9:25-29 NIV

God has given us authority to cast out demonic spirits.  Depression is a demonic spirit and can be cast out.  I started reading my bible everyday, renewing my mind with the Word of God.  Instantly, God freed me from depression.  As I stated earlier, many “experts” on the subject say depression is an illness/disease.   But my God says depression is a spirit of the enemy.  People who suffer from depression can seek deliverance and become set free.  The doctors will never have the last say concerning depression.  Choose this day to break the bondage of depression.

Breaking the Chains of Bondage Confession

(Speak this confession out loud. Believe it in your heart and begin to act as if it is already true in your life)

Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit within me, I renounce depression and every work of the flesh that has ensnared me so I can be free to run the race that Jesus has set before me.  I will keep my focus on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith.  I will run my race successfully and complete the destiny to which God has personally designed and called me to fulfill.

As I am daily washed with the water of God’s Word, the works of my flesh are being replaced with the fruits of the Holy Spirit that are maturing in me:  love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

I’ll be bound only to Christ as an obedient servant in God’s kingdom!

Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of my life. Therefore:

  • I choose this day to be free.
  • I choose life and not death.
  • I choose blessing and not cursing.
  • I renounce every work of the flesh.
  • I renounce every stronghold of the enemy.
  • I renounce every assignment of bondage that Satan has had over my life.
  • Christ has redeemed me from the curse.

I thank You, Lord, that the fruits of the Spirit are replacing the works of the flesh.  I am free from the Kingdom of darkness, bound only to the Kingdom of God’s dear Son.  In Jesus Name!!!

Much Love Always,

A Woods
